"In literature the reader ends up being the only one who really matters."

I enjoyed this intelligent interview with Gina Frangello: Well, the reader has the last laugh. In the sense of who gets to define reality as soon as the book gets published, the reader can dissent with whatever the author intended—the reader can decide that the characters were wrong about everything. In literature the reader ends up being the only one who really matters.

We interrupt this hiatus to say…

I’m back! That didn’t last long, did it? Slowly, slowly, I’m climbing back into the world of the living and so I will be posting again–though I don’t know with how much frequency. So thanks for all of your kind thoughts and wishes and thanks, as always, for hanging out. Here are some interesting bits for today from the latest issue of Other Voices: … Read More We interrupt this hiatus to say…

It’s Not You, It’s Me

It’s been great. Really. And I really, really like you. You’re funny, smart, attractive. And trust me that you do NOT look fat in those jeans; you look PHAT! Anyone would be crazy not to like you. But… it’s just that I need some space. Some time. To think. I need some time to think. About us. And so, I’m taking a hiatus from … Read More It’s Not You, It’s Me

Missing Jane Tennison

Honestly, from the first time I saw Helen Mirren as Jane Tennison I was completely, utterly smitten with her. She is my kind of character–hard, honest, determined, smart, and deeply flawed. Here was a woman who was unafraid of living in the world of men. Indeed, she led them through an intricate maze to find the bad guy again and again. Last night, Jane … Read More Missing Jane Tennison

News Flash!

Libraries are no longer places for quiet contemplation or READING. Instead: they are for random people with measuring tape to walk from spot to spot measuring things LOUDLY. They are for children to run around screaming. They are for library workers to speak at the top of their voices and drop books on the floor repeatedly. They are for copy machines to beep continuously. … Read More News Flash!

Mercury is in retrograde and…

my cable modem is on the fritz. Coincidence? I think not. Actually, it probably is a coincidence brought to you thanks of the fine people of Adelphia soon to be Comcast. When I called about the outage yesterday they told me that they couldn’t send someone out until Saturday between 11-1PM. Super! No problem, though, because I’m sure we’ll be credited for the days … Read More Mercury is in retrograde and…

Interviews galore!

Hot on the heels of Pia’s great interview with Ron Carlson I posted about earlier, here are two other interviews I enjoyed reading today: My dear friend, Katrina Denza interviewed by Susan DiPlacido And Over at LitPark, Sue Henderson has a wonderful interview with Jim Tomlinson, winner of the 2006 Iowa Short Fiction Award.

"here’s my shoulder once again"

This is one interview you will not want to miss: the incomparable Pia Z. Ehrhardt interviews Ron Carlson over at Quick Fiction: Today, my writing day felt like pushing a big rock that was flat on every side, and heavy. Oosh. All I can say is: here’s my shoulder once again.

A New Day

Today is a beautiful and hopeful new day. As results poured in from yesterday’s election, one could almost feel the entire world heave a collective sigh of relief. The tied is turning. The only word that comes to mind is this one: Peace.

here’s a great interview with AGNI‘s Senior Editor, William Pierce: It’s easy to find new writers—they’re everywhere—but finding exciting and thought-provoking new writers is not easy, and whether readers know it or not, whether they understand the way careers rely on magazine publication, whether they know how faithfully agents and editors troll the small magazines for new talent, those readers rely on lit mags … Read More read it
